Remington Sniper Rifle XM2010

It’s often said that “form must follow function.” Translated to firearms, this means the appearance of a firearm should come out of functional necessity and not be built for looks. This is especially true of purpose-built weapons such as sniper rifles. A sniper rifle is a precision tool, and it is the medical laser or scalpel of the firearm world. That said, at this point, I am also all about functionality and purpose. Gone from me is wanting a gun just because it looks interesting. Very few guns excite me based on appearance. All that went out the window the first time I saw pictures of the Remington Sniper Rifle XM2010 and the Remington MSR (Modular Sniper Rifle). Both of those Remington Sniper Rifles are the inspiration and reason the Modular Rifle website was born.

Remington XM2010 Army Sniper System

Since first seeing the Remington XM2010, Remington MSR rifles, it’s been somewhat of a dream to own either. It seemed both sniper rifles would be unattainable. Both rifles are manufactured for the military, and both carry price tags to match their intended purpose. I considered these modular chassis-based sniper rifles were unobtainable. That changed recently.

A while back, I was contacted by Drake Associates and made aware of Cadex Defence. Cadex Defence manufactures the XM2010 rifle chassis. This was pretty exciting news because the chassis is the one part I thought unobtainable. For a while, I pondered building a version of the XM2010 as close I could to the original with the hardware available to consumers. About two months ago, I learned that there is a particular Remington police sniper rifle that is available to consumers. That Remington Sniper Rifle is the Remington 700 XCR Tactical Long Range. I bought one with the intended purpose of building an XM2010. Then something happened.

Remington XM2010/M2010 Description

The XM2010/M2010 was designed and developed specifically for the sustained harsh environment of the modern battlefield using state-of-the-art technology, manufacturing processes, and corrosion-resistant materials. As an upgrade to the combat-proven M24 Sniper Weapon System, the XM2010/M2010 is chambered in 300 Win Mag for effective extended range using the M24 700 action and has proven out-of-the-box 1 MOA accuracy.

Remington Arms Chassis System (RACS)

The XM2010/M2010 features the new Remington Arms Chassis System (RACS) with a folding stock that allows for adjustment of the length of pull and cheek height and captures the bolt handle when folded. This allows the operator to configure his weapon to their personal physical requirements and transport the system more efficiently. Additional chassis features include a monolithic rail with removable rail pieces and cable routing guides that maximize rail insert space, co-align electronics, and manage electric cables.

Remington XM2010/M2010 Miscellaneous Details

Finally, the XM2010/M2010 features such end user-driven enhancements as a 5-round detachable box magazine that allows the operator to reload the weapon quickly, a Leupold long-range variable powered optic, and the Advanced Armament Corp TiTan quick-detach sound suppressor. The XM2010/M2010 – an evolutionary leap in precision engagement capability and survivability.

 Remington Defense M2010 .300 Win Mag. Barreled Action 86479, Remington M24 Barreled Action

Continuing from above that “Something” came in the form of locating the exact type of .300 Winchester Magnum barreled action used in the  XM2010/M2010 Sniper Rifle, the Remington Defense M2010 .300 Win Mag. Barreled Action part# 86479. I bought one. I now own the very same .300 win mag Remington 700 barreled action used by US Army snipers who are fielded with the XM2010/M2010 Enhanced Sniper Rifle System.

The Remington Defense M2010 barreled action costs substantially more than most typical complete Remington 700 rifles. Still, while not fancy in outward appearances, the hardware is the best that Remington has to offer. The barrel is their best 5R barrel, the best Remington factory trigger, and the barrel is threaded and includes an Advanced Armament flash hider/silencer QD mount. The  Remington Defense M2010 .300 Win Mag. Barreled Action is a sniper rifle bargain in my book.

Cadex Lite Strike Chassis for Remington 700, Long Action, Remington Arms Chassis System (RACS)

Remington refers to the M2010 chassis as the Remington Arms Chassis System (RACS). To me, it appears to be a Cadex Defence Dual Strike Chassis.

Cadex Lite Strike Chassis for Remington 700 Long Action is my choice of chassis. While not the identical chassis used on the US Army M2010 sniper rifle, the Cadex Lite Strike Chassis is better suited to my needs. Because I’m building a .300 Winchester Magnum version of the rifle, I do not need extra weight to tame the potent .338 Lapua Magnum Cartridge.

Cadex Defence Skeleton Buttstock

The Cadex Defence Skeletonized Buttstock comes standard on the Cadex Lite Strike Chassis. The skeletonized stock features a Tool-free adjustable butt pad, Adjustable cheek-piece rest, Adjustable length of pull (LOP), and a Monopod rail or optional bean bag rider.

Remington M24 Trigger

There is much military success with sniper rifles featuring the Remington M24 Trigger. At this time, I see no reason to replace the Remington factory trigger.

AAC TiTAN Suppressor

AAC TiTan Suppressor is designed for magnum .30 caliber cartridges like the .300 Winchester Magnum. The Advanced Armament Corp TiTan is also the suppressor intended to be used with the Remington Sniper Rifle XM2010 flash hider.

Accurate-Mag .300 Win Mag Magazines

I cannot confirm that the Remington Sniper Rifle XM2010 ships with Accurate Mag AICS compatible magazines, but they are the magazines available from Cadex Defence. One of the more interesting features of the Cadex Chassis is that to adapt to different calibers, the magazine well has different inserts to accept various calibers. Confusing this a little is more than one magazine option for the .300 win mag caliber. There is the AICS 3.715″ standard cartridge length magazine as well as the longer 3.775″ for Remington police rifles, and finally, there is the 3.850

Vortex Rifle Scope

The standard issue rifle scope of the Remington Sniper Rifle XM2010 is the LEUPOLD Mark 4 ER/T 6.5-20x50mm (34mm) M5A2x, H-58 Reticle. While I cannot locate the exact model number, the Leupold part# 111855 seems to be the most appropriate for the Remington Sniper Rifle XM2010.

Designed and engineered with the military sniper in mind. Leupold quickly responded to the need for a second generation of precision long-range riflescopes with the Mark 4 Extended Range/Tactical.

I’m sure this Leupold scope is outstanding scope but it most definitely is not the proper rifle scope for my application. Instead, my riflescope choice will be yet another Vortex rifle scope. Hopefully, I can find a reasonable price on the Vortex Razor HD Gen II 4.5-27×56 Riflescope featuring the EBR-2C Reticle (MOA). Vortex sku# RZR-42705.

Badger Ordnance Omnimount Scope Mount, 0 Cant

The Vortex Scope has 34mm main tube construction. I need to do the math to determine which height Omnimount best fits our Vortex Scope/Remington Sniper Rifle XM2010 combination. The three choices are 1.3″ Extra High, Badger Part Number 306-67, 1.49″ Ultra High, Badger Part Number 306-64, and 1.5″ Ultra High, Badger Part Number 306-98.

Badger Ordnance Scope Rings

The Remington Sniper Rifle XM2010 ships with Badger Ordnance Scope Rings. My preference is the Badger Ordnance one-piece Omnimount system for its simplicity and ease of alignment over two-piece scope rings.

Bipod

Harris Bipods are standard US Army-issued equipment on the Remington Sniper Rifle XM2010. The Harris Bipod is perfectly acceptable, but there is a tempting upgrade path. The Atlas Bipod is the best bolt action sniper rifle bipod!

Black Hills Ammunition .300 Win Mag

Despite the Remington Defense Catalog heavily promoting Remington.300 Winchester Ammunition. Chris Kyle’s autobiography and my research confirm that US Army snipers are supplied with the Black Hills .300 Win Mag ammunition. This is interesting as the Remington factory .300 Winchester Magnum ammunition is known to be some of the most accurate in the caliber.
