ASHBURY PRECISION ORDNANCE SABER M700 .30-06 Sport-TAC MODERN SPORT UTILITY RIFLE

November 5, 2018, APO Editorial Team APO Field Test – Big Game Hunting Season 2018 – Montana

We try and take advantage of any opportunity to get APO equipment out into the field for real world feedback from novice and experienced users alike.  We are committed to improving our products in an earnest effort to improve our customers experiences on the shooting range or in the field hunting.  This hunting season we wanted to get the SABER M700 Sport-TAC, Ashbury’s version of a Modern Sporting Rifle, into the hands of an experienced big game hunter to see how APO’s purpose built sport utility rifle performs in the wild!  You can read more about APO’s SABER M700 Modern Sporting Rifles here.

APO Custom Shop client Britton, an experienced and accomplished hunter out in Montana, offered to field test APO’s SABER M700 Sport-TAC rifle chambered in .30-06 this hunting season.  He’s got tags for big game and predators which are a great match for the .30-06 Sport-TAC!   In 2016 Britton cleanly harvested this nice Montana Big Horn Sheep at 388 yards and this Pronghorn Antelope (above) in 2017 at 596 yards both with his APO custom built SPR-300WM precision rifle chambered in .300 Winchester Magnum.  Really nice field shooting!

Britton plans to give the SABER M700 Sport-TAC a real-world workout over a couple of months in different configurations on his upcoming hunts. APO provided him with a complete rifle, ammunition and various modular shoulder stocks, hinges and alternate forends so he could set up the SABER M700 Sport-TAC MSR  the way he wants to hunt with it!  Also, we’ll get some honest feedback on APO’s use of the very popular Magpul CTR carbine shoulder stock with ¾” cheek riser on this field rifle and does it really work for hunting or just look tactic-cool?

We’ve asked him to treat our gear like it’s his own and let us know what works and what doesn’t.  If you have questions after reading his upcoming field reports, you are welcome to email us and we’ll get you an answer.

Why .30-06 you ask?  Good question, because .30-06 Springfield is a proven big game hunting cartridge over 100 years old. More importantly we could really test the Sport-TAC’s performance with Federal’s Edge TLR 175gr for hunting and Federal Gold Medal Match 168gr BTHP for long range target shooting.  The barreled action is a hand select Remington M700 SPS Threaded Muzzle with a 20″ 1:10″ twist barrel built up in our versatile lightweight SABER MRCS-AR modular rifle chassis with a  base rifle weight of 8lbs.

The SABER M700 Sport-TAC rifle’s three (3) shot acceptance group precision of 0.2 MOA was nothing short of exceptional for both types of ammunition!  Amazingly, these two Federal Premium ammunition’s were the best of the five tested, with the others averaging just over 1 MOA which was really not bad for hunting ammunition.  Do you need a 24” or 26” barrel to be effective at intermediate to long range big game hunting scenarios?  How about in a ground blind or tree stand?  The answer is… B.C. will let us know, but back here at APO HQ think the answer is NO!

The velocity of the Federal Edge TLR .30-06 ammunition out of the Sport-TAC’s 20″ barrel is 2,635fps, which is about 100 fps lower than factory spec and certainly acceptable for off the shelf ammo.  We expect that as the barrel breaks in, the ammunition velocities will increase.  Also, the good news is that we intend to precision hand load some of the Edge TLR bullets in 175gr and 200gr to improve the rifles down range external and terminal ballistic performance.

We chose the Edge TLR bullets (click to watch video above) as they were specially designed to provide better terminal ballistics (expansion) at lower velocities encountered at longer ranges; the goal obviously is a well placed shot in the vitals resulting in a clean ethical kill. We are extremely pleased with the overall sub-MOA performance and accuracy from our SABER M700 Sport Utility Rifles with quality ammunition like that from Federal Premium!

The Sport-TAC model should be available in early 2019, with SABER M700 Precision Rifle variants with slightly heavier barrels available in .308 Win and 6.5 Creedmoor available now.

For more information on the SABER M700 line of rifles visit SABER-M700.com and read this field test review focusing on hunting and rural defense in Real World Survivor Magazine. If you happen to be interested in a serious tactical version of the rifle check out the SABER M700 TR (Tactical Rifle) in .308Win and 6.5 Creedmoor its pretty sweet!

MDT RELEASES ADJUSTABLE CORE COMPETITION CHASSIS SYSTEM

The MDT ACC:  A competition chassis designed to give shooters complete control over balance and recoil reduction – with a little help from solid steel.

The Adjustable Core Competition Chassis has a fully customizable steel weight system integrated in the buttstock, barrel channel and forend. Balance your rifle, reduce recoil, stay on target – with the ACC (and 9 pounds of modular weight) you can have your metal as heavy as you like it.

The ACC (Adjustable Core Competition) Chassis is designed around an integrated, modular weight system which allows you to customize the balance and mass of your rifle to maximize performance and minimize recoil.
The ACC comes with a Skelton Rifle Stock with a steel butt pad plate for added weight and has a dedicated space to add even more weight to the stock if required.

The ACC Chassis features a full Arca rail the entire length of the forend and M-LOK mounting points for accessories and additional forend weights – both internal and external – allowing you to add up to an additional 9 pounds of steel to your rifle. See More MDT Chassis

MDT RELEASES ADJUSTABLE CORE COMPETITION CHASSIS SYSTEM

So far 2018 has kept its promises for MDT: our team is working relentlessly, releasing new products for you to customize your bolt action rifle systems, rejuvenating some of our existing chassis system lines with practical features that help you shoot better, and extending our current product offering with new inlets being released. As we slowly roll into Fall MDT is still going full steam ahead to achieve the goals that we’ve set for ourselves this year.

Today, however, we want to pause and take the time required to unveil a brand new chassis system that we can’t wait to tell you more about. It has generated a lot of excitement and anticipation internally during our design and testing phases, but also received unanimous praise from our reviewers who had the privilege of taking a first look (and shot) at it. So without further ado, we are adding the Adjustable Core Competition chassis system – also known as the ACC – to the MDT family of chassis systems for bolt action rifles.

As you can tell by its name, the Adjustable Core Competition chassis system is clearly designed for and geared toward the competition world: the ACC chassis system is best suited for the PRS & NRL shooting style. As is customary with most of our designs, we spent a lot of time collecting information from the end-users of our products. The insight we received from PRS shooters, as they shared with us which features they were looking for in a competition chassis, really helped us to develop the ACC chassis system from the ground up. So let’s review these features starting with the most significant one.

We already mentioned the ACC is a competition chassis system but you might be asking yourself why MDT chose to call it “Adjustable Core”. Any guesses? Well, it has to do with the fact that the weight of the ACC chassis system is adjustable. We designed this competition chassis with an integrated weight management system allowing shooters to personally fine tune the overall weight and balance point.

MDT Adjustable Core Competition Chassis System M-Lok Adjustable Forend Weights

MDT Adjustable Core Competition Chassis System M-Lok Adjustable Forend Weights

This adjustability comes from a series of weights that can be added to either the buttstock or the forend of the ACC chassis system, taking its original weight of 5.9 lbs to a maximum of 13.3 lbs and anywhere in between. The best part is that all this modularity can be achieved without taking your barreled action out of the ACC chassis system: internal forend weights can be inserted from the front of the forend and screwed in place, while external weights were designed to be M-Lok compatible and easily attached on either side of the forend. The ACC weight management system allows shooters to rapidly adjust the feel and recoil characteristics of their system, even while being at the range.

MDT Adjustable Core Competition Chassis System Arca Forend

MDT Adjustable Core Competition Chassis System Arca Forend

The next feature that we knew we had to integrate to the ACC chassis system is a built-in, ARCA compatible forend. As the use of ARCA/RRS dovetail systems has exploded in the competitive rifle shooting world, MDT incorporated approximately 17” of useable ARCA rail on the ACC chassis forend, machined to RRS standard, providing what feels like infinite accessory adjustability to the shooter. As you come closer to the front of the magazine well you will also notice that the barricade stop has been extended lower and angled forward. With a total height of 1.4” this barricade stop provides a greater contact area and solid lockup with any obstacle, barricade, fence or other props that match directors creatively add to their different match stages.

Moving now to the back of the trigger guard area of the ACC chassis you will notice a new MDT vertical grip. We opted for a vertical grip orientation as this is the position of choice for most competitive shooters. MDT’s vertical grip design consists of a machined core on which two polymer panels clamp on. These panels are removable and have been shaped after our original MDT pistol grip to provide comfortable hand support whether shooting prone or in position. To add to the already extensive modularity of the ACC chassis system, the panels have been designed to slide forward and back allowing shooters to custom fit the grip to their liking. MDT’s vertical grip is also compatible with standard AR pistol grip boss which means it can be used on the rest of our chassis system models and those of other manufacturers as well.

The Remington 700 action and its clones being the most used in the Precision Rifle world MDT has inleted the ACC chassis system specifically for these actions. Our team designed the ACC chassis system to accommodate oversized trigger hangers and recoil lugs without any modification to the chassis. The recoil lug pocket is now sized to fit lugs which are ⅜” thick and up to 1.270” tall (from bore centerline to bottom of recoil lug). As far as the trigger hangers are concerned, the largest we’ve tested being the one on the Impact 737R action, they drop in and fit nicely. We also added a trigger adjustment slot at the bottom of the trigger guard for the single stage triggers where the trigger weight adjustment screw is located on the bottom, making this feature accessible without having to remove the action from the ACC chassis system. The list of all compatible actions with the ACC chassis system is available on our product web page.

MDT Adjustable Core Competition Chassis System Skeleton Stock

MDT Adjustable Core Competition Chassis System Skeleton Stock

Moving to the back of the ACC chassis you will notice a few similar features to our ESS chassis system. First of all the buttstock interface with the chassis is the same proprietary interface that we used on the ESS: the strength and rigidity of this interface is a key factor that MDT wanted to keep on the ACC chassis system. Secondly, the skeletonized buttstock itself is also equipped with the same tool-less LOP & Cheek Riser adjustments present on the ESS buttstock: the brass tipped thumbwheels provide a quick way to adjust your buttstock while ensuring a rock-solid lock up once positioned. The ACC buttstock has an additional LOP adjustment guide rod to limit the amount of cant in the buttpad. Once everything is tight and snug you will not be able to feel any movement in the ACC buttstock.

While these are the main features of the ACC chassis there is much more that can be said about this system. As is the standard on lots of our chassis the magazine well of the ACC has been flared at three different angles to allow for a smooth magazine insertion, which will prove useful in those stages where time is working against you. The chassis is also equipped with wider thumb shelves to provide better contact and grip. MDT also added two M-Lok “pockets” on either side of the ACC chassis system for future accessory expansion: MDT is developing a 2-round holder that will fix into these as well as other competition based accessories to be released down the road.

We could write a couple more pages about the ACC chassis but it will not do it as much justice as taking it to the shooting range or to competition grounds to get that “field” experience of the Adjustable Core Competition chassis system’s capabilities.

Find out more information about our Adjustable Core Competition chassis system on our website. Our new MDT ACC chassis system is now available and can be ordered on the ACC chassis page.

MDT LSS-22 22LR RIFLE CHASSIS SYSTEM

The Modular Driven Technologies MDT LSS-22 Chassis System for .22LR caliber rifles is lightweight and compact, and adopts the same footprint as the centerfire MDT LSS Chassis. You will notice a significant improvement in accuracy due to the V-shaped bedding and free floated fore-end, which allows for barrel contours up to 1″ in diameter.

The LSS-22 Chassis System is manufactured out of billet 6061-T6 aluminum, and has been finished with Cerakote™ in Black or Flat Dark Earth (FDE).

To keep this chassis system compact, MDT has designed designed the rifle chassis to take collapsible AR-15 buttstocks. Fixed buttstocks can also be mounted with the use of a fixed stock adapter.

The LSS-22 uses your factory magazine and each chassis is compatible with all factory barrel contours.

Because we have lowered the buttstock interface, The Savage Mark II, CZ 455 and Ruger American are able to use iron sights with this chassis. If you are using a scope, we recommend a stock with a cheek riser. Visit Modular Driven Technologies

REMINGTON MODEL 700 PCR PRECISION CHASSIS RIFLE

Remington has finally recognized a market opportunity they have been missing out on while Ruger and Savage clean up with their Precision Rifle and Stealth models respectively. There’s a lot of negativity around this rifle and Remington in general from shooters. In my opinion any Remington 5R I have come across has been a great shooter out of the box. In fact I own several. Let’s see how this rifle performs before passing judgement on marketing claims. For a regular shooter like me if out of the box it can out shoot the other equivalent factory rifles at the range it’s a winner. For the professional competitive precision rifle shooters, military and police snipers I don’t think Remington is marketing the PCR to them. If you consider that the PCR consists of a $250 Magpul Gen 3 PRS, Magpul $25 pistol grip, $35 Magpul AICS magazine that leaves about $700 for the 5R barreled action and chassis. That in it’s own right isnt bad

I personally wish the rifle was MLOK and not Keymod’ish not that it matters THAT MUCH to me on a bolt action rifle. I only mount a bipod so all those (ugly) slots are wasted on me. What I was really hoping for from Remington was an evolutionary change to replaceable barrels like Savage….Remage….or wait for it….the Remington Defense barrels on the MSR, PSR and CSR sniper rifles. Once again Remington has the capabilities but is not evolving as fast as the competition.

Magpul Pro 700 Rifle Chassis System

When Magpul announced the Remington 700 Hunter Stock I remember thinking to myself that it wouldn’t be long until we see a precision rifle chassis from them. I also remember thinking that a well designed priced right precision rifle chassis from Magpul could dominate the low to mid range rifle chassis market. Well I’m here to report the good news that Magpul has officially announced the “Magpul Pro 700” rifle chassis. Unfortunately though I’m more than a little surprised by the $1000 MSRP. That is three times the cost of the hunter stock and in my opinion about 1/3 higher than it should be because at that price shooters are at the price of a complete Savage Stealth or Ruger Precision Rifle. Those are great tack driver chassis based rifles for the cost of the Magpul Pro 700 chassis. Insult to injury the lack of an ARCA plate is a deal breaker for precision rifle crowd. Now with that said I’m a big believer in actually trying hardware first hand instead of relying on critical negative reviews of a product very few have seen or touched. Additionally Magpul still has time to address any perceived shortcomings pointed out by the community.

  • Barrel life is improved through enhanced heat dissipation
  • Barrel harmonics are improved, as well as reduced POI shift during fire.
